Why you shoud read the novel

Reading 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' offers a vibrant journey into the original Italian folklore, full of whimsy, dark lessons, and cultural heritage not replicated in film adaptations. Collodi’s writing delivers more than just a children’s fable; the novel presents rich allegories and moral pondering that delve into personal growth, societal values, and the consequences of deception. Embracing the book allows readers to appreciate the character’s full transformation, as well as the timeless charm and imaginative storytelling that have captivated generations since its publication.

Adaptation differences

One of the main differences between the 2022 adaptation and the novel lies in tone and intention. Carlo Collodi’s book, first serialized in 1881, contains a harsher, more cautionary narrative with surreal punishments and consequences for Pinocchio’s misbehavior. Guillermo del Toro’s film, however, injects themes of grief, authoritarianism, and forgiveness, while softening some of the darker, moralistic episodes to create a story suited for modern sensibilities. Another prominent difference is the setting and context. While Collodi’s version takes place in an undefined Italian village, the movie reimagines the tale within Fascist Italy, integrating historical elements and exploring the impact of war and loss on its characters. This significant shift introduces new thematic layers and changes some character motivations, especially Geppetto’s, whose grief and longing for his lost son become the film’s emotional catalyst. Characterization and character arcs are also notably distinct. The original Pinocchio is more mischievous and frequently gets into trouble; the consequences he faces are more severe and explicitly instructive. In the film, Pinocchio is presented as innocent and naïve, with an emphasis on his misunderstood nature and unique differences—aligning with del Toro’s focus on acceptance and humanity’s imperfections. Furthermore, key plot points and supporting characters are altered or omitted. In Collodi’s novel, Pinocchio meets a host of fantastical beings, including the mischievous Fox and Cat, and undergoes outlandish punishments like being hung from a tree. Del Toro’s adaptation creates original characters (like the Wood Sprite and Death) and reinterprets classic ones, placing greater emphasis on personal sacrifice and reconciliation rather than the dire, episodic lessons of the book.
