2020 • Drama, Mystery
Curious about his uncle’s past, Wu Xie watched a mysterious video tape, only to find himself mixed up in an elaborate conspiracy. In his adventures, he encountered Zhang Qi Ling, Xie Yu Chen and others. The 6 people with different motives decided to band together. Zhang Qi Ling lost his memory by accident. The group discovered the Zhang family’s old manor held the answers they sought. However, they were stopped in their tracks by Qiu De Kao’s forces. Later, thanks to an ancient Lei family blueprint, Wu Xie became acquainted with Madam Huo of the Jiumen Sect. At her suggestion, the group embarked on a tomb raid which the Jiumen Sect had attempted many years ago in search of the truth. Unfortunately, Wu Xie was severely injured during the journey while Zhang Qi Ling went missing, leaving the mystery unsolved. Xie Yu Chen suggested Wu Xie disguise as his uncle, but Wu Xie was hesitant.

Why you should read the novel

If you want to experience the intricacies and richness of the world behind Ultimate Note, reading The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles is a must. The novels craft a deep exploration into Chinese tomb-raiding, with layered storytelling and immersive historical details that the TV series only hints at. Each book builds an intricate mythology, offering subtle character development and revealing mysteries at a perfect pace for maximum suspense. Xu Lei's writing brings to life nuanced relationships and the inner journeys of the main characters, which often get overshadowed onscreen by action and visual effects. The books allow readers direct access to Wu Xie’s thoughts, his puzzles, fears, and motivations, making each discovery profoundly personal. This narrative intimacy fosters a stronger emotional investment in the characters’ fate. By reading the series, you gain access to context and cultural references often simplified or ignored by the adaptation. The novels provide carefully detailed settings, authentic artifacts, and folklore that add depth, making every tomb and secret much more meaningful. If you want the full, unfiltered experience envisioned by Xu Lei, the books are the definitive choice.

Adaptation differences

The Ultimate Note TV adaptation simplifies the sprawling, detailed plotline of the original novels to fit the episodic, time-constrained format. As a result, many layered mysteries and puzzle explanations are abbreviated or altered, changing the pace and depth of the story. Some supporting characters’ backstories and motives are condensed or omitted, reducing their complexity. Another main difference lies in the portrayal of relationships among the main trio—Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, and Wang Pangzi. The series places greater emphasis on dramatic conflicts and action scenes, sometimes at the expense of the subtle emotional connections and trust-building detailed in the books. In the novels, character development grows organically, while the show occasionally relies on more visual or overt storytelling. Visually, the TV series takes creative liberties with costume, setting, and even supernatural elements, aiming for heightened visual impact. Certain locations, artifacts, and tomb mechanisms are redesigned or invented entirely for the screen, deviating from Xu Lei's original descriptions. The mood and atmosphere are sometimes modernized, with music and effects that depart from the novels’ mysterious, ancient tone. Finally, some plotlines and endings are changed to cater to television conventions or to leave room for further sequels. These alterations can lead to inconsistencies with the source material, and some of the philosophical or thematic questions posed in the novel are glossed over or simplified. As a result, the TV series often sacrifices the complexity and integrity of Xu Lei’s original vision for broader appeal and accessibility.
